Mammillaplasty
To those men and women who are embarrassed by flat inverted nipples, which refuse to go erect, take comfort knowing you are not alone. This is an extremely common problem. Fortunately, it is also a straight forward problem to fix. There are several corrective procedures used by plastic surgeons. Dr. Baeke believes only one technique provides the best chance of a permanent cure.
Inverted nipples result from abnormally short milk or lactiferous ducts which tether or tug inside the nipple. Once these ducts are cut, the nipple is free to go erect. The procedure takes about 30 minutes and can be performed under local anaesthesia, or as many women prefer, at the same time as other plastic surgery while they are already asleep. Risk of any complications is low, but would include infection, recurrence and discomfort. The procedure should not effect nipple sensation. The only downside to this operation is women should not expect to breast feed in the future as the ducts would have been cut. So, if pregnancy is in your future, either delay the operation or plan on bottle feeding.
For more insight on precisely how Dr. Baeke does this procedure, prospective patients are invited to view a very good video by Dr. Adrian Richards (England): nipple inversion.
Now for those men or ladies who are blessed with too much of a good thing, and have nipples with too much protrusion, this too can be an embarrassing problem. A simple nipple reduction operation is offered, which also takes about 30 minutes and can be performed under local anaesthesia, or as many women prefer, at the same time as other plastic surgery while they are already asleep. Though this procedure does not necessarily prevent future breast feeding, that ability may be limited. Post-operative recovery is usually rapid. Sensation should not be affected.
Again, Dr. Baeke uses the same technique as shown in the excellent video posted online by Dr. Adrian Richards (England): nipple reduction.
