Brachioplasty
An upper arm lift is designed for those individuals who are displeased with the "waddle" hanging from their upper arm. This deformity develops over time and is often the result of loss of weight. It can cause embarrassment such that individuals will shy away from wearing certain clothing.
Dr. Baeke feels comfortable in performing this procedure and will occasionally combine it with liposuction, but will not combine it with liposuction. The surgical technique is performed under general anaesthesia. and takes approximately 1 hour per arm. It involves excising the redundant soft tissue from the underarm to the elbow. The result is an upper arm with a smaller circumference that is more proportionate to the forearm. There will be a scar in a "glove seam" distribution. The scar is only visible when the arm is raised overhead but should not be noticeable when arms are in a natural resting position. The scar is not very wide and most women are quick to say the seam scar is much preferred to the unsightly waddle.
Dr. Baeke has never had any complications following this operation, however, possible problems would include poor wound healing, infection, areas of numbness, hematoma, etc.
This operation is occasionally covered by insurance in the case of the reconstructive post-bariatric patient, but is typically considered elective cosmetic.
