Blepharoplasty
Blepharoplasty or as more commonly called, eyelid surgery is an operation performed for both cosmetic/aesthetic and reconstructive reasons. It can be performed on either the upper or lower eyelids.
Dr. Baeke is his own harshest critic. Again, he only does what he does best, and therefore he leaves lower eyelid surgery to others, while he "focuses" on just the upper lids.
The purpose of upper eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is to remove the excess skin and and fat which can give an aged, tired appearance to the face. Further in some cases, the eyelid bags and folds actually interfere with upper visual field gaze. In such situations, insurance may even cover the cost of the operation.
In either case, the out-patient operation is performed in the operating room under either light sedation or general anaesthesia, patient preference. It usually takes about 45 minutes per eyelid.
Healing should be rapid and with minimal discomfort. The risk of complications should be very low. Minimal swelling/bruising is common. Dr. Baeke has never had any complications with any of his eyelid patients.
The goal is to provide a patient with eyes appearing well rested, YET EYELIDS WHICH STILL MATCH THE REST OF THE FACE.
Too many celebs... and we all know who I am referring... have had too much skin removed from their eyelids. Their 20-year-old looking eyelids no longer match their 75-year-old face! Add to this the chronic red-eye (conjunctivitis) also caused by over aggressive eyelid surgery, and this all spells real tears for the patient and too much fodder for the paparazzi.
